Production Notes - Scene 1 - The Last Stand
This scene depicts the tail end of the failed Canadian assault on Dieppe two years prior to D-Day.
Unfortunately, I had to resort to using British uniforms for the Canadian soldiers.
The audience is introduced to a small piece of Lance's military past, and August 19 is established as one important anniversary date.
Musical cues you may not have noticed:
- As the camera pans in toward the beach, there is a quick drumbeat just before switching to the troops rushing into view.
- The music builds during each shot of Private Walter Sears, leading into the knife fight. This was timed so a specific horn cue played as we see Sears and the German stand off.
- As the music declines, the knife fight ends. This was timed so the bell cue would play just after Lance declares "He's made it!"
- The opening and closing portion of "A Lone Fight" sound quite similar, hence both the opening and closing shots include a long establishing shot.
Sound editing you may not have noticed:
- The ambience is completely changed from its default. The base ambience is taken completely from the Tropical Beach set, but all its bird noises were removed. Inserted in their place were bird noises from the Rural Forest set. The bird noises and ocean waves were volume leveled each time the camera switches from one set to the other.
- When Walter engages the German machine gun, the camera switches between that and the conversation on the beach. Listen carefully and you can still hear the battle waging in the background during the conversation. This was achieved by taking the sound effects from the "Soldiers Shoot" scene, and some careful volume leveling.
