Production Notes - Scene 7 - Story of Dieppe
In this scene, Lance tells the story of Private Walter Sears, who we saw in the opening scene of the film rushing off to engage a German machine gun.
The intent here is to show a little slice of Lance's character - rather than focusing on the negative aspects of the failed Dieppe raid, he remembers what one of his fellow soldiers did two years prior (to the day).
Note that this scene takes place exactly two years after the first scene in the film: the morning of August 19, 1944.
Visual editing you may not have noticed:
- There is one early shot here, of the bell tower, that is actually from the Wild West Street set.
- Throughout this entire scene, there are 30 unique camera angles of "Group Talk". Many of them have a subtle counter-clockwise motion, intended to symbolize Lance remembering something from the past.
Sound editing you may not have noticed:
- The background ambience was generated using Magix Music Maker. The default ambience on the city sets contained all sorts of inappropriate noises - people calling for taxis, sirens, and so on. I couldn't have those sorts of things in Caen in 1944. ;)
- When the visuals switch to the flashbacks, the background ambience is actually a mixture of the Magix city sound and the Beach / Forest sets.
- The background music playing during the story is "A Lone Fight", the same as the foreground music in the first scene in the film. This is a link to the Private Sears character.
Script changes by JazzX:
- The final gag at the end of this scene was completely rewritten. JazzX noted that a word I used ("sirrah") did not quite have the meaning intended, so I scurried and changed the gag to the "burning a candle at both ends" bit. ;)
